Valacyclovir is clinically proven to reduce outbreak duration by 1-2 days when taken at first symptoms. For genital herpes, it decreases viral shedding by 80% during suppressive therapy. The medication shows particular effectiveness in preventing recurrent outbreaks, with studies demonstrating 70-80% reduction in episode frequency with daily use.
After oral administration, valacyclovir converts to acyclovir in the body. The active form then inhibits viral DNA polymerase, preventing herpes virus replication. This prodrug formulation achieves 3-5 times greater bioavailability than standard acyclovir, allowing for less frequent dosing while maintaining therapeutic effectiveness.
